Silos Level Monitoring

The Challenge

Knowing the volume of storage tanks and silos used in different industrial processes is crucial, therefore, to keep an adequate control of their inventories, companies must continuously and accurately monitor the stock levels in their storage systems; however, this turns out to be a huge challenge because for most of these companies the only current solution is manual verifications, which in some cases is done twice a day and with a tool that is introduced into the silo by trained personnel working at heights.

The Solution

The innovative solution provided by SMART CITIES PR together with the company Sigfox Puerto Rico, uses an ultrasonic sensor connected to a datalogger, which uses Sigfox wireless technology. This solution continuously measures the amount of flour remaining in the silo and sends the data to our platform. Users can view the measurement from any device or receive an email alert when the level reaches a set threshold. This solution is available for farmers, suppliers and biomass.

Precise measurement

The Challenge

A supplier of chlorine for the local water authority, was founding it difficult to accurately ascertain how much chlorine was in each of their tanks, at the client’s 100 plus water plants. For the supplier to know the chlorine levels in their tanks, they had to rely on the plants operators to take a daily visual reading of the chlorine level in their tanks and call them whenever the tanks were at 10% to 20% full to schedule a resupply. This prove to be a challenge, as the operators frequently forgot to do a visual inspection, thus failing to call at the expected level, and avoid the tanks to become exhausted. This would then force the supplier to make an unscheduled delivery that would cost them 25% to 35% more. It also, place the plant at a risk of having to shut down until the chlorine was available.

The Solution

Our software gathers and stores information from deployed remote tank sensors regularly, in an orderly and easy to understand manner. The system provides the users with simple history graphs along with easy-to-use data export functions.
The Results

In response to their challenges, the chlorine supplier implemented our ultrasonic sensors across all of their tanks. The sensors were configured to monitor the chlorine level in their tanks, and to alert the supplier when the level was low, prompting an automatic resupply. By means of the new resupply process using tank level data provided by our ultrasonic sensors, a more automated resupply solution was attained. The data also allowed for a more accurate demand forecasting, resulting in improved supply, and put a halt to unscheduled deliveries. It also removed the burden placed on plant operators and removed the risk of a plant shutdown due to a depleted tank.
